ENGIE Announce Expanding Electric Vehicle Charging Network for Waverley Borough Council
GeniePoint Network providing both public and workplace charging to support switch to zero carbon transport across the South
24 November 2020. ENGIE has been working closely with Waverley Borough Council, who in September 2019 declared a climate emergency and is now actively working to reduce carbon emissions across the borough.
In support of their drive to improve air quality and become carbon neutral by 2030, a key part of the councils’ commitment is to embed carbon reduction across all aspects of Council operation.
Transport forms a major part of the council’s Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy, and Waverley Borough Council have put in place plans to help reduce carbon emissions from public and company vehicles across the area.
Firstly, to migrate its fleet of council owned petrol and diesel-powered vehicles, to zero emission electric powered vehicles, immediately cutting carbon output.
Secondly to provide rapid electric vehicle charging facilities across the area in publicly available car parks to encourage people that live, work or drive through the area to also make the change to zero and low carbon transport.
To support these plans, ENGIE EV Solutions have been working alongside Waverley Borough Council to provide an electric vehicle charging solution to meet their range of requirements.
ENGIE has already installed GeniePoint Network chargers across Waverley’s public car parks in Cranleigh, Godalming and Haslemere, and further chargers scheduled to be installed in Farnham. These chargers are rapid, 50kW+ chargers with three connectors – DC CCS, DC CHAdeMO and AC Type 2, which will charge any model of electric vehicle. The chargers are accessed via the GeniePoint App, available from the App Store or Google Play, or by RFID card. Drivers also have access to free customer service which is available 24/7.
Councilor Steve Williams, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: “The continuation of our commitment to EV infrastructure is a key part of Waverley Borough Council’s aim to become carbon-neutral by 2030 and, hopefully, an encouragement to residents to switch to electric vehicles and help us achieve this. As a council, we purchased our own 100% electric car earlier this year to help drive down our own carbon emissions, the first of many electric vehicles we will be purchasing over coming years and we are encouraging the suppliers we work with to do the same.”
In addition to the public chargers, ENGIE have also installed a workplace charging solution for Waverley Borough Council’s own fleet vehicles. Three Alfen Single Proline chargers have been installed at the Council offices at The Bury’s, Godalming, to provide easily accessible, secure private charging facilities during working hours. These chargers are then publicly available between 5.30pm -8.30am, providing additional charging capacity to further support the switch to electric vehicles.
Councilor Nick Palmer, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Operational and Enforcement Services said: “”As the use of electric cars increases in line with national strategy, we aim to respond to keep pace with demand, so that drivers in Waverley can be confident that they will have recharging facilities as they visit our area.”
